It's the formation of a blood clot inside the lumen of a vessel that acts as an element of obstruction. If the blood clot is dislodging it becomes an embolism or several emboli. Both a thrombosis and an embolism can be fatal (coronary arterial obstruction or pulmonary embolism for example). There are numerous ways to treat and prevent a thrombosis. You can enter the vessel mechanically and remove an existing obstruction, you can prescribe anticoagulants for patients that are deemed to have risk factors etc.
