These are the 5 hidden areas in a chest X-ray that I always review very carefully before I finish reporting. It is very easy to overlook a pathology in these areas partly because of the anatomy but mostly because we simply haven’t trained ourselves to actively look for these. 1. Apical regions: Notorious for small nodules, mass lesions, pleural thickening or a small pneumothorax. 2. The area behind the Sternoclavicular jont: Small pathologies from both the lung and mediastinum may sneak behind the bones here 3. Hilum: Important areas that should always be checked for any asymmetry with the other side 4. Retrocardiac area: Lung pathologies behind the heart are hard to notice unless your train yourself to specifically look for them 5. Retro-diaphragmatic area: Effusions or mass lesions may hide behind the domes of the Diaphragm
