It is a common viral infection caused by enterovirus genus- Coxsackie virus A16 and enterovirus 71 ( most commonly) affecting children below 5 years . Transmitted with direct contact with infected person. Patient presents with low grade fever, papulovesicular skin rash over palms, soles , mouth and less commonly over genital area and also developed ulcer or blisters in oral cavity. The illness resolves within 4 to 5 days in most patient. Complications: loss of toe nails or finger nails. Rarely aseptic meningitis, encephalitis, polio like paralysis, myocarditis and respiratory distress syndrome Diagnosis: clinically and should be differentiated from other oral ulcers such as hermetic gingivostomatitis and aphthous ulcer and also from chicken pox and insect bite allergy Treatment: symptomatic with analgesics and soft diet No vaccines available
