What are the components of preprocedural evaluation for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)?
Electroconvulsive therapy is conducted by the approval of a psychiatrist after a complete evaluation. Anesthesiologist, psychiatrist, and the medical technician then discuss the case and decide the dose and type of drugs to be administered according to the patient’s condition as the patient might be suffering from some type of complications or might be on medications that would need to be altered during electroconvulsive therapy. Before the procedure, the patient should undergo a thorough evaluation which includes: • Psychiatric assessment • Medical history • Physical examination • Discuss the risk of anaesthesia • Personal or family history related to anaesthesia • Dental history • Documentation of drug therapy • Documentation of prescribed medicines • Hand dominance Lab tests include: • CBC • Serum potassium • Serum Sodium • Urinalysis • Electrocardiogram • Renal function tests • Radiological studies • Bain imaging via MRI or CT
