Lumbar puncture is avoided in patients who have increased intracranial pressure. The increase in pressure maybe a result of intracranial lesion, brain tumor or any internal bleeding in the brain. Before performing lumbar puncture the patient is assisted in cases of suspicious headache, vomiting or ataxia. CT scan can be performed to ensure when it is safe to perform lumbar puncture and when to avoid it.
