The equipment used in any procedure on a patient must be sterilized before the procedure and then used on the patients to avoid contamination. If the equipment is not sterilized before the procedure, it can result in the manifestation of new diseases in the patient or worsening the existing condition of the patient. Like any other procedure, equipment used in lumbar puncture must also be sterilized. Contamination of spinal needle may result in cellulitis, skin abscesses, epidural abscesses, spinal abscesses, or diskitis. Infections of occurrence of any disease due to contaminated equipment can be avoided by following the sterile technique, wearing sterile gloves, gowns, hair covers, and face masks. The physician should also thoroughly clean and disinfect the area of lumbar puncture to reduce the risk of infection
