CSF can be studied for proteins, glucose and chloride ions. The normal value of glucose present in CSF is 50-80 mg/100ml. The main cause of hypoglycorrhachia (low CSF glucose levels) is bacterial infections and inflammatory conditions. Hyperglycorrhachia (high CSF glucose levels) does not have a pathological cause and therefore, high CSF glucose levels have no specific diagnostic importance. The normal range of proteins in CSF is 15-60 mg/dL and an increase in CSF protein is indicative of neurological diseases. The normal range for chloride is 110 to 125 mEq/L and a decrease in chloride ions is mainly due to bacterial meningitis.
