Chronic intractable primary and secondary headache disorders along with neuropathic pain in occipital or sub occipital regions are the main indication for occipital nerve stimulation. Patients in whom traditional medical therapy does not work and continue to have chronic headache can benefit from occipital nerve stimulation. Patients with occipital neuralgia, post traumatic pain, postherpetic neuralgia may find relief from occipital nerve stimulation as well. A number of headaches such as occipital headache, cervicogenic headache, migraine, tension and cluster headache and headache secondary to idiopathic intracranial hypertension can also be treated with occipital nerve stimulation.
