Causes of high blood pressure consist of many reasons. These include • smoking, obesity • sedentary life style • high sodium intake • alcohol, stress • old age • genetic predisposition • diabetes • chronic kidney disease • adrenal disorders • thyroid disorders • sleep apnea. In 95% of the cases no cause can be found thus labeling it essential hypertension. Men, smokers, women on OCPs, pregnancy and age above 35 yrs are always at a higher risk. Secondary hypertension is the type in which a cause can be determined. Management can be broken down in 2 parts: One being changes in life style. Healthy diet, daily exercise and leaving smoking and alcohol consumption. Medical treatment options include: calcium channel blockers, Ace-inhibitors, Angiotensin receptor blockers, diuretics and beta blockers.
