Staphylococcus or its abbreviation Staph is a type of microbe (bacteria) that can cause infections almost anywhere in the body. One type of staph, called Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), is methicillin resistant. Thus more difficult to treat.
Staphylococcus is a micro-organism categorized as gram positive cocci. It is a grape-like clustered catalase-positive organism. It survives in neutrophils by degrading superoxide H2O2 into hydrogen and oxygen. There are three types of Staphylococcus; Staph. aureus, Staph. epidermidis, and Staph. saprophyticus. Staph. aureus is the most pathogenic type.
