Alcohol reduces sleep onset latency which means you are likely to fall asleep more quickly with alcohol than without. However, alcohol reduces REM phase of sleep. It is the stage of sleep which ensures quality sleep. Longer REM sleep makes you feel fresh and rested. Since alcohol reduces REM sleep therefore you are likely to wake up cranky, annoyed and upset. Moreover, alcohol increases the tendency of nightmares.
