West Nile Virus (WNV) causes mosquito-borne illness. This pathogen infects birds, horses, and humans mainly. Culex pipiens is the mosquito species that carries WNV from birds to humans. WNV spreads via blood transfusions, organ transplant, pregnancy, delivery, and breast feeding and laboratory handling. Unlike many viral diseases, it does not transmit by respiratory droplets and physical contact. There is no vaccine for WNV. Surprisingly, the infected individuals usually remain asymptomatic. Fever is a rare symptom relieved by over-the-counter medicines.
