Thiomersal is a medium containing ethyl mercury. It is a vaccine additive employed to prevent the growth of bacteria, virus and fungi in inactivated vaccines. Thiomersal maintains sterility of vaccines. If the function of thiomersal is compromised and the germs grow in vaccine, it can cause illness and death.
