Mechanism of Action of Lactulose Lactulose is a laxative which is actually man-made sugar. This synthetic oral solution, sometimes administered rectally by healthcare providers, act in large intestines. Lactulose simplifies in your large intestines and absorbs water in it. More water softens the bowel and facilitates their movement in intestines. Lactulose is also prescribed for portal-systemic encephalopathy which develops due to high ammonia level in blood. Since lactulose is basically a laxative therefore, it absorbs ammonia from blood into the large intestines. It is excreted out of body in stool.
