Herpes is an incurable but manageable disease. Valacyclovir (Valtrex), Acyclovir (Zovirax) and Famciclovir (Famvir) are used for the treatment of genital herpes. These medicines reduce severity and duration of herpes breakouts. Depending upon the condition, there are two types of treatment courses. • Intermittent treatment; begins when symptoms appear in a breakout. Doctor prescribes medicines for 2-5 days. The breakout resolves on its own within few days. People who have been experiencing flare ups previously are recommended to keep medicines in hand. • Suppressive treatment; for people with frequent outbreaks. Medicines reduce the number of outbreaks to 70-80%.
