Prothrombin time, serum albumin and LFTs need to be done for assessing the severity of disease. Imaging tests need to be done too which include abdominal ultrasound, MRI to exclude benign tumors, endoscopy to detect varices and liver biopsy. Apart from this, several investigations can be done to determine the cause. These include viral markers (for hepatitis), serum ceruloplasmin (for Wilson's Disease), auto antibodies (for autoimmune hepatitis), alpha-1 antitrypsin levels etc.
