Lou Gehrig's disease, more commonly known as ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. As motor neurons degenerate, they stop sending messages to the muscles and the muscles gradually weaken, start to twitch and atrophy. Eventually, the brain loses its ability to initiate and control voluntary movements.
