It is a rare birth defect in which the fetus's legs stick together, giving the appearance of a mermaid's tail, hence the name.

According to the assertion of a medical historian to the British newspaper, the Daily Mail, mermaid syndrome affects one out of every 100,000 children around the world. (about the same rarity as conjoined twins), they are usually fatal within a day or two of birth;  Due to complications associated with abnormalities in the development and function of the kidneys and urinary bladder.  More than half of the cases of mermaid syndrome result in stillbirth, and the chance of this condition occurring in identical twins is 100 times greater than in single births or fraternal twins.This condition arises from the failure of the normal blood vessel supply from the inferior aorta to the uterus.  Maternal diabetes has been associated with retraction caudal syndrome and mermaid syndrome,although some sources question this association.
