Breath holding spell is a phenomenon in children aged between 6 months to 18 months characterized by episodes of breath holding. These episodes are triggered by anger, frustration, or painful incident. As a result of forced expiration during crying, the child may become cyanotic, lose muscle tone, and sometimes, even become unconscious. The condition is self-limiting hence reassurance is adequate.
