Chest pain is a symptom that should be taken seriously and the patient should always see a doctor. The causes can be dangerous as well as minor and is usually accompanied by some other symptom. The reasons may include: myocardial infarction, angina attack, GERD, asthma attack, pneumonia, pneumothorax, pleural effusion, pleurisy, trauma, respiratory tract infection, pulmonary edema, pulmonary embolism, lung cancers, mediastinal mass, pericarditis, panic attack or just plain muscular pain. Management is usually cause related. Angina pain settles with nitroglycerines, PPI may cause pain relief for GERD. Bronchodilators settles chest pain of asthma attack. Antipyretics relieve chest pain and fever with pneumonia.
