What nerves do the upper limb reflexes test?
In upper limb neurological examination three reflexes can be assessed. The biceps reflex, triceps reflex and supinator reflex. Bicep reflex is elicited by identifying the bicep tendon while placing the arm in lap conveniently. It is located in the antecubitol fossa. The tendon is striked with the hammer and a contraction is seen in reflex. It examines C5 and C6 supply. Tricep reflex is seen by lifting the arm at the shoulder and abducting it. The arm is flexed at 90 degrees. Triceps tendon is identified and it is striked. A visible contraction is seen. It checks C6 myotome. Supinator reflex is examined by striking the brachiradialis tendon proximal to wrist and on lateral side of the forearm. It checks C7 root.
