Peritoneal fluid can be analysed according to the Serum-Ascites Albumin Gradient (SAAG). Serum-Ascites Albumin Gradient is the difference between serum albumin concentration and the albumin concentration found in the ascetic fluid. It is calculated by: SAAG = (albumin concentration of serum) – (albumin concentration of ascitic fluid) The SAAG is used to differentiate between transudate and exudative ascot if fluid. The following table provides different causes of ascites according to the SAAG. Picture credit: https://litfl.com/peritoneal-fluid-analysis/
