Lingual necrosis

Lingual necrosis caused by mucormycosis in a patient with aplastic anaemia. Mucormycosis is a rare but aggressive fungal infection that predominantly affects immunocompromised. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, especially those with ketoacidosis, are at high risk. Other high risk groups include patients with cancer, especially those who are neutropenic and receiving broad-spectrum antibiotics, and individuals receiving immunosuppressive agents, including oral or intravenous steroids and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha blockers. Successful mucormycosis treatment requires correction of the underlying risk factors, antifungal therapy and aggressive surgery. . . Credit: British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
