Antivirals for Treatment of Influenza • Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) - Neuroaminidase inhibitor - Effective against Influenza A and B - Administration within 48 hours of onset of symptoms - Administered orally - Availability as 30, 45 and 75 mg capsules - Relieves symptoms in 1.5-2.5 days - Efficacy not well established - Not recommended as first choice of treatment - Side effects include irregular heartbeat, facial swelling, diarrhea, cramps and jaw, back or arm pain and chest pain or discomfort • Zanamivir (Relenza Diskhaler) - Neuroaminidase inhibitor - Effective against Influenza A and B - Administered by inhaling - Availability as oral inhaler device with 5 mg drug - Not recommended as first choice of treatment in case of underlying chronic pulmonary condition - Side effect includes fatal bronchospasm - Efficacy not well established • Peramivir (Rapivab) - Neuroaminidase inhibitor - Effective against acute uncomplicated influenza - Administered within 2 days of symptom onset - For patients of 6 months and older • Baloxavir marboxil (Xofluza) - Capdependent endonuclease inhibitor - Effective against acute uncomplicated influenza - For patients of 12 years and older - Administered within 2 days of symptom onset - Administered orally
