What landmarks can you use on a chest radiograph to confirm correct placement of a nasogastric tube?
After the insertion of the nasogastric tube it should always be checked as it is a blind procedure. The two methods available are by pH checking of the contents aspired and getting a radiograph done. On the radiograph: bifurcation of the carina is in the middle indicating where the trachea and bronchioles are. The tube travels past the diaphragm and deviates to the left into the stomach. The tube tip visible in the stomach confirms the placement.
