How do you classify severely acute presentations of colitis?
Ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease presents with abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, fever, blood in stools and malaise. It is a recurrent disease. It has periods of symptom free time and then severe episode with signs. Due to these recurrent episodes nature, can lead to multiple serious complications. When a patient presents with an episode, severity criteria called True love and Witt’s criteria. These criteria include: 1) stools with blood more than 6 per day, 2) history of fever for 2 to 4 days, 3) hemoglobin less than 10.5mg/dl, 4) ESR value more then 30, 5) pulse rate more then 90/min and 6) colon dilated more than 5.5cm.
