Mumps is a systemic viral illness that is caused by a rubulavirus that is a paramyxovirus. The illness is acute in nature and mostly self-limiting. The prodromal period is characterized by the symptoms of fever, malaise and headache which is then followed by enlargement of the parotid gland that is tender in nature (parotitis). The complications that can occur in rare cases include: 1. Epididymo-orchitis 2. Meningo-encephalitis 3. Oophoritis 4. Pancreatitis 5. Myocarditis, hepatitis, polyarthritis. The management is usually supportive.
