Does alkaline phosphatase go up in myeloma?
Once there is a doubt of presence of myeloma, tests are done. Tests include: blood test for M protein, beta microglobulin. Urine tests can also confirm M protein presence. These are called Bence jones proteins. Bone marrow examination is another lab available for biopsy. Imaging labs include: MRI, PET scans. Management of the disease is dependent upon the staging of the condition. Alkaline phosphatase is normal because it is an indicator of high osteoblast activity which is normal in multiple myeloma. Multiple myeloma involves the activity of osteoclasts. Alkaline phosphatase levels may only be increased in myeloma when bone metastasis is present in late disease.
