What is the most common time for the complications to occur during mechanical ventilation?
Mechanical ventilation is a life saving procedure but it can also become life threatening if the complications occurs. The complications are prone to occur at any time in a ventilated patient. Following complications can occur with mechanical ventilation: 1. Ventilator associated pneumonia 2. Barotrauma: It produces further complications like: • Subcutaneous emphysema • Pneumothorax • Pneumomediastinum 3. Volutrauma from overdistention of alveoli. 4. Oxygen toxicity 5 Intrinsic positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) or auto-PEEP 6. Pulmonary edema 7. Hypoxemia 8. Delirium: Because of the sedatives given during the process. 9. Immobility 10. Damage to vocal cords: During the process of intubation. 11. Biotrauma: Damage to lungs causes inflammatory response causing further damage to tissues. 12. Atelectrauma: Damage to lung tissues due to repeated collapse and expansion.
