Deep vein thrombosis requires treatment especially if there is high well's score present. It is recommended to use oral anticoagulants with or without prior parenteral anticoagulant administration. Use of parenteral anticoagulant may be done with use of vitamin k as an adjunct therapy. This may include heparin, (low molecular weight heparin) or a DOAC. DVT requires long term use of anticoagulants and monitoring labs. In some cases, even prophylactic anticoagulant use may be required for indefinite period. In patients who still develop DVT even on anticoagulant therapy, a temporary intravenous catheter filter may be used to prevent emboli in vital organs. Patients with deep distal thrombosis may or may not be kept on anticoagulant. This decision may vary with every case individually as distal deep vein thrombosis has low risk of progression.
