Arterial Injury Associated with Knee Dislocation

Arterial Injury Associated with Knee Dislocation

The popliteal artery is the direct continuation of the profunda femoris which runs in the popliteal fossa behind the knee joint. Being the deepest structure of the popliteal fossa, it lies in close proximity to the knee joint and is prone to damage in a knee dislocation injury. Damage to this artery deprives the lower limb of its principle source of blood supply and can have serious consequences if not repaired in time. A duplex ultrasound or CT angiography may be performed to confirm the presence of vascular injury. If addressed and repaired within 6hrs, the limb salvage rate is good but beyond that, amputation may result. Source: https://musculoskeletalkey.com/vascular-problems-of-the-knee/
