Phases of Whooping Cough (Pertussis) Phase 1: Catarrhal Phase • Initial 1-2 weeks • Mimics common cold • Symptoms include; • Low-grade fever • Runny nose • Pause in breathing i.e. apnea • Mild cough Phase 2: Paraoxysmal Phase • After 1-2 weeks • Symptoms include; • Paroxysms of coughs followed by ‘whoop’ sound • Vomiting during or after the spell of coughing • Exhaustion after coughing fits Phase 3: Convalescent Phase • Less frequent episodes of coughing • Symptoms improve
