How can tidal volume and rates be setup in mechanical ventilation?
SETTING UP TIDAL VOLUME AND RATES ADULTS AND OLDER CHILDREN In healthy lungs: 12-12 Rule is applied in which tidal volume of 12 mL/kg is given 12 times in a single minute. In COPD: 10-10 Rule is applied where tidal volume of 10 mL/kg is given 10 times in a single minute. This is done to prevent hyperventilation. In Acute respiratory distress syndrome: Tidal volume is decreased to 6-8 mL/kg 10 to 12 times in a minute. This is called lung-protective ventilation. INFANTS AND YOUNGER CHILDREN Healthy lung: 4-10 mL/kg of tidal volume given 30-35 times in a single minute. In Acute respiratory distress syndrome: Tidal volume is reduced and Respiratory rate is increased to maintain adequate pCO2 (i.e. between 45-55)
