Recurrent inflammation leading to ulcers in large gut is called as ulcerative colitis. It is one of the diseases included in inflammatory bowel diseases. It is a slow developing disease. It presents as recurrent episodes of abdominal pain, diarrhea, blood in stools, rectal pain or bleeding, weight loss, fatigue and fever. On examination pathological findings can be divided into 2 types: macro or micro. Macro pathological findings include: 1) inflammation extending proximally to rectum, 2) left sided colitis, proctitis or pan colitis, 3) friable mucosa, bleeds on minor trauma. On microscopic examination, signs present are: 1) superficial inflammation only 2) crypt abscesses 3) goblet cell depletion. These features differentiate it from crohn's disease, another similar inflammatory bowel disease.
