I'm currently a senior in high school and I currently have no idea what I want to do. I know I want to be in the medical field for sure, but there's so many things I'm interested in, it's hard to choose! Especially with majors, I'm not sure which one is best to go with. The university I'm going to attend has majors like biology, biochemistry, neurology, and nursing. I'm interested in surgeries and I love learning about the circulatory and nervous systems. Do you have any advice for what the best option would be?

Shadow and volunteer as much as possible! It's really hard to picture yourself in a field without actually engaging in it. Plus getting involved in a field is a really quick way to find out what parts of medicine you don't like. As far as majors go I would recommend biology because the lower level courses courses are broad and usually easy to transfer to another major if you were to change your mind later. Additionally, most medical school and nursing school prerequisites are covered in the biology major. However, if you decide to go to nursing school you wouldn't have to complete the biology bachelors degree. Good luck.

It’s honestly what you like to do. Med school will take any major as long as you have the pre-recs they ask for. Most biomedical and science based majors already incorporate your stuff. If you wana go to med school don’t do nursing, that is a profession and schooling all on its own. There isn’t a biochem major but there is a chemistry major and biology major if that’s your interest. I know art majors who have gotten into medical school so.

I would suggest possibly going into Nursing. The great part of Nursing is that you can move between specialties as much as you like. You will get much more exposure to various Clinical experiences than any other medical profession. I hope that helps

Yeah my mom wants me to go into nursing, but I don't have a good understanding of what nursing really is (if that makes any sense😂)

Totally makes sense! I had no clue what Nursing was until i got into the nursing program. Then i realized that in America we are trained as generalist nurses which means we are trained for everything wgich really opens up your options. In Europe nurses choose a specialty and only focus on that which really limits their career options. If you want once you become a nurse you can go on and become a nurse practitioner or get a DNP (doctorate of nursing practice) and basically do everything a doctor does except you will have much more bedside practice and get to spend more time doing firect patient care than a doctor. Plus you can still write prescription's and everything. The only drawback is each state has a different scope of practice for nurse practitioner's so you would want to research a nurse practitioners scope of practice for whatever state you want to work in. For me I completed my Nursing education in Iowa but opted to get my Nursing license in Minnesota so i can work at Mayo clinic. Nursing is so much more flexible and you can keep going to get a doctorate or teach nursing.

Do Chemistry as a Major better suited for Medical School

I want to do that, but the college I'm interested in doesn't have an actual chemistry major! And I really want to make this college work because it's so close to my job

I am a junior in high school. For the longest time I have been juggling back and forth between Veterinary and Pilot. This is the stage where you start searching for professions that may interest you. I later found at that I was not that interested in becoming those things as much as I thought I would want to. Then I was developed an interest in medicine. It was a very passionate, yet “severe” interest in nursing. I spent so much money on books and I even went to buy scrubs and medical tools that a nurse who would be in school would need. This is how you know you are really passionate about the field. Where i live, the nursing program is strictly competitive. i suggest talking to an adivsor. They are always big help

The medical field is so huge and filled with so many options! Volunteering and shadowing and even interviewing different people within the medical field will help you narrow down what you want to study. Having your basics down is also good to have before choosing specifics, like knowing the human anatomy and things like that. Depending on what your high school offers, take medical classes and anatomy classes. Mine has a CNA class which is such a great step in starting the journey into the medical field. Don’t be afraid to be open minded and seeing what your options are! Good luck :)

Being interested in a topic and walking the life of that field are nit the same. Shadow various health care professionals and look at what their day to day life looks like. Talk to them about what they like and dislike about what they do. I have been a university educated RN and nurse midwife for 45 years. I would do it over in a second if I gad to. I love nursing. But do a university program. Community college programs are quickly becoming obsolete.
