Causes of Hyperkalemia 1- Chronic kidney disease (kidneys fail to excrete adequate potassium from the body) 2- Uncontrolled diabetes (insulin shifts potassium into the cells. Lack of insulin causes hyperkalemia) 3- Medication (such as NSAIDS, beta blockers, Calcium channel blockers, digoxin etc also cause hyperkalemia) 4- Hypo-aldosteronism (one of the functions of aldosterone is to excrete potassium from the body)

1. Release of Potassium from Intracellular Fluid (ICF) 2. Inadequate and improper excretion of Potassium 3. Excessive intake of Potassium 4. Pseudohyperkalemia: In vitro cellular breakdown leading to wrong measurement of Potassium
