I am interested in becoming a doctor but I’m not entirely sure if I’m suited for the profession. What are some qualities/skills you would need to have to become a doctor?

You need to really want to be a physician. I mean, as in know this is ABSOLUTELY what you want. It’s not a career, it’s a different lifestyle. If people become physicians for the money — well, they have strong willpower that’s for sure — but they tend to get burned out quickly. I’ve seen so many physicians just dead inside. Dull. Jaded. It makes me wonder why are they even here? If you’re not happy, do something else. I also know physicians who couldn’t imagine doing anything else. The money is just a bonus. If this was a minimum paying job, they would go through it all again to be a physician. You need to have good communication skills. You need to never underestimate a patient’s condition. Never think you’re higher than someone else. Every encounter with a colleague or a patient is a learning experience. You need to be humble. You need to know how to work as a team. You need to know what the difference a team leader and a “boss”. You need to realize that every other person, whatever their position is from Nurses to EMTs to Pathologists to ... they are ESSENTIAL to you being a doctor. You need to know the body/pathologies on a cellular level. And once you know that in and out, then dive in deeper. You need to stay calm under pressure. Think fast and adapt rapidly to multiple changes during a code, for instance. You need to be the face of calm when everyone is looking up at you. They will reflect your attitude. You can’t let your emotions get the better of you. If anyone insults you, try to understand why, and if you can’t just forget about it. There are more important matters to attend to. You need to be honest. You need to have empathy and never lose it. You need to know how to take a break, when it’s needed. These are the first qualities that came to my mind. Ask yourself why you want to be a doctor? What’s the one main reason? Best of luck.

If you're unsure about why you want to become a doctor, for the experience and enjoyment of the medical field or solely for the money, I'd recommend volunteering at a local hospital. There's lots of things you can do, patient ambassador, help out in the OR, or file paperwork; all will give you a lot better sense of what it's like to work in the environment.

The thing about this profession is that IT chooses you, you don't.
