What are the complications associated with intubation during mechanical ventilation?
Mechanical ventilation in the term used for assisted ventilation where oxygen is supplied to the lungs by means of artificial ways. It is done in cases when the person is unable to breath on his own. Complications are prone to occur at any point of mechanical ventilation. The intubation associated complications are as follows: 1. Complications during the process of intubation: • Damage to upper respiratory passages and nasal passage • Laceration of oropharynx • Damage to teeth • Vocal cord injury • Perforation • Tube placement into esophagus • Cervical spine injuries • Dislocation of arytenoid cartilage • Damage to recurrent laryngeal nerve-> Hoarseness 2. Complications due to prolonged intubation: • Ventilation associated pneumonia • Vocal cord paralysis • Pressure ulcers • Tracheal stenosis and necrosis
