Sideroblasts are RBC precursors which contain iron filled mitochondria in a ring like fashion in the cell's periphery. They are seen in sideroblastic anemia and myelodysplastic syndromes. Sideroblastic anemia may be due to a genetic defect of incorporating iron into hemoglobin or it may arise as a result of lead poisoning, vitamin B6 deficiency, copper deficiency. Alternatively, it may be drug-induced.
