Bursitis is a structure which helps reduce the friction when muscles glide over each other or bones or even skin. It is a sac like structure filled with fluid and lines by synovial membranes. Bursitis is the pain and tenderness of the bursa with or without overt inflammation sign. Bursitis may be the result of: direct injury, trauma, prolonged pressure, over use, crystal induced arthropathy, arthritis or infection. The condition can present as an acute case (crystal arthropathy) or chronic (such as rheumatoid). The condition is more pronounced in weight bearing joints. Treatment options available include: pain killers, anti-inflammatory meds, steroids or intra articular steroid injections.
