On a chest x ray, the features of pleural effusion include blunting of the costophrenic and cardiophrenic angles, fluid within the horizontal or oblique fissures and eventually, a meniscus will be seen. Furthermore, with large volume effusions, mediastinal shift occurs away from the effusion.
