Pathogenesis of Influenza Virus • Influenza virus binds to cell membrane. • Influenza virus replicates in columnar epithelial cells of respiratory epithelium of upper and lower respiratory tract. It produces cytokines, granzymes and cytotoxic factors. • The cytokines, granzymes and cytotoxic factors cause airway inflammation. Airway inflammation causes cause damage of airway epithelial cells and endothelial cells, airway narrowing and hyperactivity. It exacerbates to bronchial asthma and COPD. • The cytokines, granzymes and cytotoxic factors also cause alveolitis. Alveolitis is the inflammation of alveolar epithelial cells and endothelial cells. It exacerbates to pneumonia and ARDS.
