What treatments are used for the underlying issues in myasthenia?
Myasthenia gravis is a synaptic pathology. The disorder is auto immune in nature. Antibodies are formed against acetyl choline receptors in post synapsis. This prevents the muscle excitation to occur. This leads to muscle weakness while performing any activity. Management includes medication such as acetyl cholinesterase inhibitors and immunosuppressant’s such as steroid. Atropine and physostigmine is used. Surgical intervention like thymectomy is thought to treat myasthenia gravis. plasmapheresis can be used to remove antibodies from the blood. Use of IV immunoglobulin’s is also preferred but it is a temporary treatment.
