Corticosteroids (such as Dexamethasone) for COVID-19 Treatment Corticosteroids, such as Dexamethasone, have immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory properties. Steroids are used to treat several conditions including allergy, arthritis, skin diseases, respiratory diseases, blood conditions and much more. In a test, the effect of corticosteroids in COVID-19 patients was evaluated. According to findings, Dexamethasone reduced the mortality to one-half among patients on ventilators whereas the mortality was reduced to one-half among patients who required oxygen only. According to WHO guidelines, there are two recommendations for use of corticosteroids among COVID-19 patients. 1. Oral or IV administration in severe and critical COVID-19 patients 2. NO administration is non-severe COVID-19 patients unless they are using for other medical conditions Duration of administration: once every day for 7-10 days Daily dose: 6 mg of dexamethasone, equivalent to 160 mg of hydrocortisone (i.e. 50 mg every 8 hours or 100 mg every 12 hours), 40 mg of prednisone, 32 mg of methylprednisolone (8 mg every 6 hours).
