Ankle clonus is part of the tone section in the motor system examination and is done to elicit muscle clonus that can be seen in some upper motor neuron (UMN) and other lesions. To check for ankle clonus the patients leg is supported with 90 degree flexion of both the knee and the ankle, then the foot is briskly dorsiflexed and everted partially and the pressure is sustained. If positive the clonus is appreciated as repeated cycles of dorsiflexion/ plantar flexion.
