Doctors discovered a gold mine in an X-ray image of a woman's knees who was suffering from acute joint pain: hundreds of small gold acupuncture needles left in her tissue. Osteoarthritis is a disorder in which the cartilage and bones in the joints deteriorate, producing pain and stiffness. The 65-year-old South Korean lady had previously been diagnosed with it. She had resorted to acupuncture when pain killers and anti-inflammatory medications failed to cure the pain in her knees and instead produced stomach trouble, she informed her doctors. Her physicians reported in the New England Journal of Medicine in December 2013 that the needles, which were probably composed of gold, were purposely left in her tissue for ongoing stimulation.
