Dysentery refers to blood in loose stools. It may be caused by bacteria or amoeba. Bacterial agents that can cause dysentery are shigella, campylobacter, salmonella, and E. coli. MILD SHIGELLOSIS Mild shigellosis can be managed symptomatically. The treatment is supportive and is based on rehydration. In addition, bismuth salicylate can be indicated to relieve cramps and diarrhea. SEVERE SHIGELLOSIS Antibiotics are indicated in severe cases of shigellosis. For resistant strains, re-evaluation is often required to prescribe another antimicrobial agent.
