Cystic fibrosis is an autosomal recessive disorder that is caused by a mutation in the genes that code for the CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator). This damages the chloride and water transport across the surface of epithelial cells leading to abnormally thick mucus in the lungs as well as damage to the pancreas, liver, intestines and genitourinary tract.
