Scabies is an ectoparasitic infection caused by a mite Sarcoptes scabeii. The characteristic features are intense itching, often generalized and increasing at night time along with the presence of burrows on skin. Norwegian or crusted scabies is a much severe form of this condition often seen in immunocompromised individuals. In this case, each burrow contains several hundreds of mites in contrast to a few mites in traditional scabies. Topical creams such as permethrin alone become insufficient for treatment and oral agents such as ivermectin need to be added. In very severe cases, surgical debridement remains the only plausible option. Source: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2210261219304079
Typically how does an individual get this? Other than what you said,is it hygiene or something else
Yes, the mite spreads via close contacts and fomites such as infected towels, bedding and clothing. Closed and crowded living spaces and unhygienic measures greatly promote the spread. As a result, whole families, neighborhoods or living hostel may be affected at a time.
