The diagnosis of dementia cannot be just made on the basis of history or presence of sign and symptoms. It requires a complete workup which mostly involves ruling out any other underlying reason. For this purpose blood labs: full blood count( rule out infection), LFTs ( hyper ammonia ), Thyroid function tests, vitamin B12 levels, urine exam ( uremia, drug abuse) and CT head are performed.
